Hire a Motorbike on Langkawi

If you’re thinking to hire a motorbike on Langkawi it would be a wise idea to make yourself familiar with the local road laws before hand. It’s also important that you understand how different riding a bike in Langkawi may be from your home country. We’ve pulled together some basic advice about what to expect when you hire a motorbike on Langkawi and how to stay safe on the road.

Security Deposit and Initial Checks

When you hire a motorbike on Langkawi you will be asked to leave your passport as security. Some companies may accept a cash deposit instead, but more often than not a passport is preferred. Before signing any rental agreement, first check over the vehicle thoroughly. Make a note of any dents, scratches, marks or defects you notice, however big or small they may be. Bring them to the attention of the bike owner and ensure the defects are recorded. If you notice any existing damage, take a photo. Should there be any discrepancies when you return the bike, you will have photographic proof.

Before you set off, make sure that there is at least enough fuel in the bike to get you to the nearest gas station. Whether the fuel tank is full or empty when you take the bike, you’ll be expected to return it with the same amount of fuel. This should also be recorded on the rental agreement.

Fuel

When driving around the island, remember to check your fuel level regularly. Unlike other parts of Malaysia and Thailand, gas stations on Langkawi are a far distance from one another. Keep the tank topped up so you don’t end up stranded. Fuel costs approx RM2.50 per litre when bought from a gas station, but prices may vary a little across the island.

Your first trip to a gas station on the island may confuse you a little. In Langkawi, you pay for the amount of fuel you want BEFORE you fill up. As a guide, most saloon cars if empty cost approx RM50 to fill and motorbikes cost approx RM8 to fill. If you find you’ve paid for more fuel than you can fit in your tank, don’t worry because you can claim it back at the counter.

Road Safety

Exploring the island by bike is a great way to visit all the local attractions at your own speed. Hire a motorbike on Langkawi and you’ll be free to go where you like, when you like. But with this comes a small amount of risk too. Even with years of experience behind you, the environment around you can differ significantly compared with your home country.

Take it slow and steady on the roads. Both the driver and the passenger should always wear a helmet. In Langkawi you drive on the left hand side. Beware of hazards in the road, such as parked bikes, children playing and animals. Dogs and cows frequently lay in the road and are generally not expected to move for road users. It’s down to you to go around them. You are also likely to encounter chickens, cats and buffalo’s crossing the road. You may even see the odd snake cross your path.

A lot of the roads on Langkawi are well maintained, especially on the main routes. However, pot holes are very common and some can be extremely deep. Keep an extra ear out for these at night especially.

Before even leaving your home country, make sure you take out travel insurance. This will ensure that should you have an accident during your trip, you are taken care of and you don’t end up with any big bills!

Road Laws When You Hire a Motorbike on Langkawi

1) When you hire a motorbike on Langkawi, you must carry your drivers license with you at all times (International drivers license if you are not from Malaysia)

2) Helmets are mandatory if you’re riding a motorbike. Fines are given (approx RM50) if caught not wearing one. More importantly, should you have an accident on the island, be aware that the hospital on Langkawi does not have the facilities to treat head injuries. You will have to be urgently transferred to Penang (45 min) by helicopter or boat to receive treatment.

3) Road blocks are commonplace in Langkawi. The police are mainly interested in locals driving around with no licence/tax disc. On the off chance you are stopped, you will be expected to provide your license.
